Focus On The World

Belgium, March 2009 Print E-mail

Situated  in northwest Europe, it has a colourful political history. Its architecture is amazing. Bicycles are plentiful.  It  is  famous  for chocolates and waffles. But did you know that French fries originated in Belgium? "What language do Belgians speak?" - That is a question I am asked. The main  linguistic groups are the Flemish [Dutch speaking] and French, but there is conflict between the two groups. Some Belgians speak English very well.
It was  fascinating  to visit a  few of  the 144 war graves of Flanders region. Thousands of soldiers died  there in  the First World War defending the nation of Belgium from their enemies. The soldiers were from England, Canada, West Indies, India and other British Commonwealth nations. They gave  their  lives  so  that others  can have  freedom.  It  is a  reminder of what  Jesus did  for us. He  laid down His life so that we can be free from the clutches of sin and death and enjoy the blessings of God.

Does Belgium need Bible teachers? The answer is "Yes!"  Evangelical churches are small in numbers and there is great need also for evangelism. Our host, Camille, explained that when she spoke to individuals about Jesus, some people pulled money from their pockets and said, "This is my god" WOW!

"Now I see what you go through!" my mother commented. This was her first missions trip and she  saw some of  the challenges. Our  friends  from Canada,  John & Camille  Iversen were great hosts.

SALVATION OF SOULS

God blessed us with a wonderful three day conference and an all-day  leaders’ seminar with the  Kortrijk  Care  Group,  which  was  pioneered  by  Camille.  Kortrijk  used  to  be  the  "linen capital"  of  Europe.   Three  individuals  gave  their  lives  to  Jesus  -  One  young  boy  and  his teenaged sister, as well as another lady. We give God the glory!
Our  theme was  "Walking  In  Freedom"  and we  saw  the  Holy  Spirit  set  people  free  from bondages. One mother  testified  that her  twin baby boys could not  sleep properly at night. After prayer  in one of the services, they slept right through and she was also able to sleep. The next day she received prayer again and felt a spirit of sexual immorality leave her body.  Hilde shared that after receiving prayer privately she could not find her asthma medication. She realized however, that she was breathing fine without it.
Another  lady  was  able  to  forgive  members  of  her family who had done wrong to her. The Lord touched her  deeply  bringing  inner  healing.  My  mother  was healed of  severe back pain and a problem  in her  left arm. One  of  the men was  powerfully  delivered  from oppression  in  his  life. We  praise  God  for  all  that He did.

A TASTE OF GHANA

"There are black people in Belgium?" one man asked with surprise. There are peoples of many nationalities living in Belgium. At the Pentecostal Revival Church in the city of Antwerp [well-known for trading diamonds], we enjoyed Ghanaian style church services for three days. Our hosts, Pastor & Mrs Isaac Lough are originally from Ghana, West Africa. The Lord’s presence was with us and He ministered to the people at the altar. Chains were broken by the power of the Holy Spirit. The messages on faith were well-received, and brought an invitation to return to speak at a women’s conference.
